A fan's glossary: the makeup terms and league terms to know

From cut creases to Locked, the words you will hear at a Luxury Mayhem League match, explained in plain language.

You don’t need to be a makeup artist to love watching one compete, but knowing the words helps. Here are the terms you will hear on the set and in the comments, split into two groups: the craft, and the league.

The craft

Baking. Pressing a generous layer of translucent powder onto areas like the under-eye, letting it sit for a few minutes, then dusting it away. It sets concealer and brightens the area.

Color correcting. Using tinted products before foundation to cancel out discoloration. Peach and orange tones counter dark circles on many skin tones; green tones counter redness.

Contour. A matte shade a little deeper than the skin, used to create shadow and shape (under the cheekbones, along the jaw). Not the same as bronzer, which adds warmth where the sun would naturally hit.

Cut crease. An eye look where a sharp line of contrast “cuts” across the crease of the lid, usually with a lighter shade on the lid below it. It takes a steady hand, which is why it is a favorite under a clock.

Flashback. A white cast that shows up in photos taken with flash, often from certain powders or sunscreens that reflect light.

Halo eye. Darker shades on the inner and outer corners with a bright shade in the center of the lid, so the eye looks lit from within.

Strobing. Building glow with highlighter on the high points of the face instead of shaping with contour.

Tightlining. Applying liner into the upper lash line so lashes look fuller without a visible line.

The league

Station. Where an artist works during a match: one model, one chair, one number.

Coach. The person who leads a team during a match, calling the plan and moving artists where they are needed.

The clock. Matches run in timed rounds, and the clock is visible to everyone in the room.

Locked. When time runs out on a section, it is locked. A locked section can’t be touched again.

Scores up. The moment judges call their scores out loud and explain them.

Final Look. The winning look, announced at the end of a match, with the model holding it for the camera.
